The Japanese telecom company NTT East is working with Earth Eyes, a computer vision startup, to tackle shoplifting in retail stores. The collaboration resulted in a system called AI Guardsman which leverages machine learning and computer vision to identify shoplifters. This system relies on the security cameras that already exist in stores. It can scan the videos in real time to find suspicious activity. Once it detects what appears to be like shoplifting, the system alerts security and provides them with a short video of the incident. It is then up to the store’s security to determine how to act. The company expects the system will become increasingly accurate over the next few years.
